Kawerau Pathways to Work
Kawerau Pathways to Work (KPtW) is an employer driven initiative designed to establish a local ‘employer-employee connect’ system to improve the likely outcomes and sustainability of employment in our workplaces.
KPtW’s original He Poutama Rangatahi funded Cadetship and Industry Training Support Service programmes were discontinued as a result of the Covid-19 restrictions and replaced by a focus on understanding the Government support schemes for apprenticeships and redeployment of workers.
Government’s cross agency support for business and employees is enabling employers to ‘grow their own’ workforce by engaging apprentices and upskilling their staff to adapt to changing demands.
KPtW are assisting in this process by establishing Employer Trade Clusters in Electrical, Mechanical and Auto Mechanical to provide support to both employers and all levels of apprenticeship through facilitating local study groups, pastoral care and numeracy/literacy classes for employees.
In conjunction with the Tertiary Education Commission and the Tarawera High School an Industry Advisory Group are developing the Student Pathway to Industry Entrance programme to showcase local workforce opportunities and provide career pathways for rangatahi.

KPtW Industry Training Support Services
Established in partnership with industry, this locally based Study Support and Pastoral Care system provides support for those already engaged in an apprenticeship or full time employment.
This concept was identified as a need by industry and involves
- learning/study supports;
- access to technology;
- literacy and numeracy supports;
- the facilitation of study groups;
- investigations into the establishment of night classes.
The programme encourages and supports pastoral care for apprentices and other full time employees who may be facing personal challenges affecting their employment.

Workforce Development
Realising Kawerau’s potential through increased community wellbeing is a fundamental component of ISK’s philosophy.
The resilience, sustainability, growth and diversity of Kawerau’s industry base, an increasing workforce, and a rise in the average household incomes within the District are important contributors to the welfare of the general community.
Developing a skilled and capable workforce is central to an efficient business and the stability of the economic environment. ISK members recognise the importance of balancing commercial aspiration with a belief in the greater good and social values, and are taking a positive leadership role in the development of programmes that enable the full participation of the community in the workforce.
Growth stimulated by successful applications to the Provincial Growth Fund, Government’s Social Procurement Policy and NZ Border restrictions are now driving workforce demand and highlighting the need for skill workers within the District.
Programmes which actively connect to our local employers and industries, incorporates personal aspiration building and provides training and ongoing employment placement support were commissioned in 2019 and are now being implemented by ISK’s Workforce Development team KPtW (Kawerau Pathways to Work).
