Infrastructure and Transport

Quick Facts

As of 2012, Kawerau has a population of 7,000 people. However, the town has enough infrastructure in place to cater for a much larger population of 15,000.

Centrally located in the North Island; Kawerau is one of New Zealand’s youngest towns. It combines an abundance of natural resources with extensive road, rail and port infrastructure to allow for reliable transport to export markets across the globe.

Welcome to Kawerau,

A special place purpose-built for heavy industry, due to its close proximity to large supplies of natural resources. Together, we embrace business, the environment, and the community.

Industrial Symbiosis Kawerau is a smarter way of doing business by creating efficiencies and opportunities, while tapping into the abundant renewable resources of the region.

One of the biggest advantages for exporters based in Kawerau is access to Australasia’s most productive port, which is only 83km away by rail. The Port of Tauranga is undergoing further expansion to allow greater opportunities for exporters, and will soon become one of the few port calls for the larger container ships able to carry 7,000 TEU's.

Also, New Zealand’s free trade agreements with a number of countries, including China, means exporters based here gain remarkable access to the world’s fastest growing economies. When these factors are combined, it makes sense to establish manufacturing operations in Kawerau.

We only have one planet. Industrial Symbiosis Kawerau is the answer for contemporary organisations that wish to lower their carbon footprint, optimise resources and help make this world a better place for future generations.

Kawerau offers businesses the opportunity to have a positive impact on climate change by reducing the amount of carbon emissions in the atmosphere and the amount of waste in the ground.

With easy access to export markets, and minimal distance to travel to reach the port, businesses in Kawerau are in an ideal position. The potential development of a transport logistics hub in the region will ensure further progress is made in the reduction of carbon emissions for businesses getting their product to market.

Industrial Symbiosis Kawerau protects our earth for future generations. If we truly care about the world we leave behind, we must embrace cleaner industry.

It takes a unique blend of factors to make industrial symbiosis a viable business model. Kawerau has everything needed for a harmonious relationship.

Kawerau offers fully consented brownfields suitable for heavy industry, as well as newly rezoned greenfields catering for light to medium industry..

The arrival of new industry to the town will allow Kawerau to grow into and fully utilise its infrastructure provisions, while offering new businesses a cost effective and ready-made solution for their needs..

Plans are already in place to further enhance the road and rail network throughout the Bay of Plenty, and with more developments taking place at the Port of Tauranga, Kawerau is perfectly positioned to offer the quality infrastructure needed by industries in the region.

Together, we embrace Kawerau.
