Quick Facts

Geothermal generation provided 12.8% of New Zealand’s electricity supply in 2010, having grown from 7.5% in 2006.

Resources

Completion of a 100-megawatt power station in Kawerau during 2008 increased New Zealand’s geothermal capacity by 25%. This facility alone meets approximately one third of residential and industrial demand in the region, while new plants are in development to further increase capacity.

Welcome to Kawerau,

A special place that offers a unique mix of renewable energy generation to power sustainable business today and well into the future. Together, we embrace business, the environment, and the community.

Industrial Symbiosis Kawerau is a smarter way of doing business by creating efficiencies and opportunities, while tapping into the abundant renewable resources of the region.

Quality, abundance and potential are three key terms when it comes to electricity in Kawerau. With the Kawerau geothermal field being recognised as a world-class, high temperature resource, a number of developers have been assessing the potential to increase electricity generation in the region.

It is estimated that current installed electricity generation capacity at the Kawerau geothermal field is at less than a third of its stored heat potential, excluding the direct heat supply to industry. As such, generation capacity expected to increase substantially over the next several decades.

Smart companies realise that with an abundance of geothermal potential, Kawerau is the ideal location to power big industry well into the future.

We only have one planet. Industrial Symbiosis Kawerau is the answer for contemporary organisations that wish to lower their carbon footprint, optimise resources and help make this world a better place for future generations.

Electricity generation in the Kawerau region is dominated by renewable sources.

With large volumes of geothermal energy in the area, Kawerau offers a unique alternative to traditional energy generation.Local industry as well as well as energy companies have latched onto this potential, with Norske Skog Tasman and Eastland Group both developing binary plants as of 2012, to tap into Kawerau’s geothermal energy. On top of this, two nearby hydro plants provide electricity to the national grid.

The world’s largest application of geothermal direct use for industry provides renewable energy that is sustainable and reliable. If we truly care about the world we leave behind, we must embrace cleaner industry.

It takes a unique blend of factors to make industrial symbiosis a viable business model. Kawerau has everything needed for a harmonious relationship.

Kawerau offers a combination of commercial opportunities and access to an abundance of natural resources that is unrivalled in this country. When our affordable housing and enviable climate is combined with the region’s unspoilt environment, it makes for a winning formula.

For a town that was founded on heavy industry, electricity supply has always been vitally important. Fortunately, Kawerau has an ample supply, which only continues to grow. Businesses that establish themselves here can gain access to this reliable supply of clean, base-load energy.

No matter how much energy your business needs, we’ll have you covered. Together, we can provide geothermal energy to power industry for generations to come.
